Review: 2018 2Hawk Malbec

2Hawk swoops in (sorry) via the Rogue Valley of southern Oregon, 81% Malbec, 19% co-fermented Cabernet Franc & Merlot, aged 21 months in 29% new, 30% 2-year old, and 41% neutral French oak. Like other Malbecs originating stateside, this is quite fruit-forward up front with notes of plum and raspberry and a secondary layer of vanilla and chocolate as it develops in the glass. It never drives too dark or earthy, but instead keeps things straightforward and favors the fruit, most likely from the influence of Cabernet and Merlot. The finish is crisp and tannic, softening the dark fruit just a touch and raising the volume on notes of baking spice and vanilla. I can only imagine how good this will taste after a year or two in the cellar. That will remain most likely remain a mystery unsolved: the sole remnant here consists of an empty bottle.
